TC GIRLS TENNIS FALLS TO MT. VERNON. Triton Central’s girls tennis team saw its undefeated run come to an end Saturday morning, falling to Mt. Vernon 3-2 in a tightly contested match. The loss moves the Tigers to 11-1 on the season, but the final score didn’t fully reflect how competitive the matchup was throughout. Mt. Vernon gained the early advantage by sweeping the top two singles positions. At No. 1 singles, Caroline Allen defeated Maryrose Felling 6-0, 6-1, while Elena Marmion followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Anniston Evans at No. 2. Triton Central answered at No. 3 singles, where Zhibek Zhumaly continued her strong season with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Avery Spalding, keeping the Tigers within striking distance. The match ultimately came down to doubles play. At No. 2 doubles, Cadence Roberts and Estelle Gearlds were dominant, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win to even the team score. However, the deciding point came at No. 1 doubles in a back-and-forth three-set battle. Neve Kahler and Kate Collier took the opening set 6-3, but Mt. Vernon’s duo rallied to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-4 to secure the team victory. The junior varsity team provided a bright spot for Triton Central, earning a 6-4 win in a competitive match. Ellie Gast and Lexi Poole picked up singles victories, while several doubles teams contributed key wins, including the pairings of Lucie Garver and Ava Copeland, Madison Swisher and Brenna Mahurin, and Reese Kelley and Penelope Turner. The Tigers return to action Monday evening at Beech Grove, with matches scheduled to begin at 5 PM.
